A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
