More than 20 Olympic medal winners, mentors and other international athletes have signed a letter demanding a halt to the execution of a boxing champion and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's expanding employment of executions as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased appeal censures the Iranian regime's verdict to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, thirty, from the city in the northeastern region, was detained for being involved in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and charged of backing an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in prison, where he has been mistreated and kept in seclusion.

“Athletics is intended to inspire faith, togetherness, and bravery,” the supporters wrote. “The capital punishment of a champion for his beliefs is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to every athlete who attempts to voice opinions.

Pattern of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The appeal noted that the athlete's case was not an isolated one and underscored Iran’s record of sentencing to death sports champions for their views, for example a football captain, leader of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, an athlete, a 27-year-old Iranian competitor, was put to death.

Other supporters to the letter include a sailing champion, who captained the pioneering women's squad in a global yacht race and was the pioneering lady to receive a renowned sailing award; the previous skipper of the national squad a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was arrested in early 2020. The charges against him entailed “promoting decay on Earth through arson and damage of public property”. His ruling has been annulled on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was condemned as “deeply biased” by advocates and groups.

Call to United Nations

The appeal to halt the boxer's execution is subsequent to a previous letter to the UN high commissioner for freedoms, backed by in excess of one hundred human rights experts and entities, calling for intervention to avert the competitor's death.

Death Penalty Surge

Based on reports, there is an “capital punishment escalation in the country, which has attained horrific levels”. In two thousand twenty-three, authorities executed at least 853 people – a nearly half rise on the previous year. In the prior period, data showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, marking the peak figure since the year 2015. Over 800 people have been sentenced so far in 2025.
