The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
