Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The update is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This advancement aligns with a surge in content created by AI, fueled by recent AI video creators.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or dreamlike.
Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as artificially created. In total, over 100 m videos are submitted to the service every day, making AI content a limited percentage of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they see by accessing the topic control setting in the platform and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the setting cover politics, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s guidelines mandate users to tag convincing AI-made content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the service will from now on attach an AI-generated label to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This action is aimed to stop users from attempting to evade the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
The company is additionally establishing a $2m educational fund for professionals and institutions to create learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit non-profit groups focused on training programming and robotics.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, amid debate over intentions to lay off numerous safety staff in the UK. TikTok is expected to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content ahead of it has to be seen by humans. The platform reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
